Brit food!

Two weekends ago, on a hectic sunday after tidying up my room n house I decided that the best way to end up the weekend was eating some comforting, “winterish” food. I had mince meat and I had seen Gordon Ramsay cooked his Sheppards pie. This is a traditional british dish which I find really easy to cook and really tasty! I cooked it the Gordon way. The ingredients I used were….

Shepherd’s pie

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 500g minced lean lamb (I used minced beef)
  • 1 large onion, finely grated
  • 1 large carrot, finely grated
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1-2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree
  • Handful of thyme sprigs, leaves picked
  • 1 sprig of rosemary, needles chopped
  • 250ml red wine
  • 300ml chicken stock
  • 1kg Desiree potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks (Just potatoes!)
  • 50g butter
  • 2 egg yolks
  • Parmesan, for grating
I preheated my oven to 180°. Seasoned the meat. Fried it in a little bit of olive oil, added the sliced carrots, onions and garlic. Added the Worcestershire sauce, the leaves I had and the tomatoes puree and stirred for further 2 mins or so. After that, the wine is added until reduced and then to complete I added chicken stock and brought to boil and simmer until it thickened.
I also had put some potatoes to boil, when I saw they were ready I mashed them, added the beaten egg yolks and added some parmesan.  Once both things were ready, I placed the meat at the bottom of the baking tray and added the layer of mash on top. Topped it off with a lot of parmesan cheese and to the oven for around 20 mins.
